Mange prie aime

Au-delà du message appuyé et franchement bourgeois, ainsi que des longueurs qui plombent le récit à quelques moments, cette adaptation attendue du best-seller d'Elizabeth Gilbert au titre en forme de mantra séduit par son charme discret et sans artifices.

Beaucoup trop long pour son propre bien (140 minutes!), Eat Pray Love possède autant de munition de séduction que de répulsion. S'il est facile de décrocher devant tant de belles et naïves aspirations, quelques scènes plus intimes (les retours dans le passé par exemple) font apparaître de sincères moments d'émotions, alors que l'interprétation d'ensemble évite que l'ouvrage se noie dans un océan de bonnes intentions. Il y a un public pour tout et dans le genre, cela aurait pu être bien pire.

Magnifiquement filmé et porté par une trame sonore racée, Eat, Pray, Love  réussit l'exploit de rendre l'essence de cette année autour du monde d'une femme en apparence comblée par la vie, qui frappe un mur.

The resulting bestseller phenomenon is something no one could have anticipated, but now that we have Eat Pray Love the movie, it's clearer than ever that Liz Gilbert, as played by Julia Roberts, is more avatar for all women than an actual human being. We watch her and her blond highlights and her tasteful clothes travel the globe because we cannot do the same, and whatever story might come along with it needs only to not get in the way of all the wish-fulfillment going on in the theater.

It's a thin story, on paper as well as on screen. A privileged woman ends her marriage for vague reasons and decides to get in touch with her true self. She ventures to Italy for the cuisine, goes to India to meditate and finds love in Indonesia. The whole quest feels a bit forced, though it's an appealing travelogue.

If there is one constant in Eat Pray Love, the imperfect yet beautifully rendered adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert's memoir on a year of heartbreak and healing starring Julia Roberts - it is this: There will be tears.

The food looks great, but the romance is undercooked, and God remains strictly a bit player in Eat Pray Love. While far from an unpleasant experience as it whisks Julia Roberts through Italy, India and Indonesia (tourist boards, rejoice), director Ryan Murphy's superficial take on Elizabeth Gilbert's phenomenally successful memoir is an exotic junk-food buffet.

Directed by Ryan Murphy, who wrote the screenplay with Jennifer Salt, the film offers an easygoing and generous blend of wish fulfillment, vicarious luxury, wry humor and spiritual uplift, with a star, Julia Roberts, who elicits both envy and empathy.

Il en résulte néanmoins une production sans grande surprise, sorte d'album de voyage glamour où foisonnent les close-up de la star, qui ne laisse aucun souvenir impérissable après deux heures quinze, soit un bon quart d'heure de trop.
