John Carter

Malgré la désuétude du matériau, l'écriture exemplaire de l'adaptation, la mise en scène inventive du réalisateur de Wall-E et la complicité des deux vedettes sauvent la mise.

Pour les plus grands, cependant, ce film devient vite lassant. Nonobstant les incongruités sur le plan narratif, on déplore surtout le fait que seule la princesse semble être convaincue d'avoir un but dans cette histoire...

Divertissant familial de luxe qui ne se prend pas au sérieux et qui pourrait très bien débuter une licence en cas de succès commercial, John Carter est un grand film d'aventure, à la fois simpliste et fascinant, répétitif et haletant.

Plus de 30 ans après Star Wars de George Lucas, lequel s'inspirait très librement du Cycle de Mars, John Carter paraît pour le moins inférieur à son prédécesseur avec ses acteurs principaux sans charisme, ses personnages peu attachants et ses allures lourdaudes de péplum poussiéreux.

C'est sans surprise que John Carter prendra surtout la forme d'un collage assez peu inventif réunissant nombre d'éléments visuels et narratifs provenant de diverses productions du genre ayant vu le jour au cours des dernières années, mais sans réussir toutefois à les utiliser à meilleur escient.

It doesn't help that this live-action debut from Andrew Stanton is exposition heavy and that the human cast is unengaging. On the other hand, the green-skinned, four-armed Tharks and "monster dog" Woola are awesome, and the action scenes are fun enough.

The film's lengthy, rocky journey through pre-production probably is more engaging than Stanton's finished product, and could make for a riveting documentary somewhere down the road.

Kitsch certainly has the physical look to play Carter, with him having a lean, wiry-but muscular look that's a contrast from some of the burlier action heroes.

Derivative but charming and fun enough, Disney's mammoth sci-fier is both spectacular and a bit cheesy.

Though the project, based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel A Princess of Mars, is ambitious, it's also bloated, dreary and humorless. It's tedious even during its frantic action scenes, many of which also involve computer-generation and performance-capture technology.

My advice? Shut out the noise and just watch the movie. For all the bumps in the narrative, concocted by Stanton, Mark Andrews and novelist Michael Chabon, and less-than-stellar 3D effects, John Carter exerts the pull of a tall tale told by a campfire.

Messy and chaotic, in other words, but also colorful and kind of fun.
