Carnage

Cela dit, cette exploration désespérante de la nature foncièrement animale de l'être humain sous son vernis de bienséance apparaît ici un peu artificielle et mécanique.

Grâce à sa mise en scène précise et rigoureuse, Polanski exacerbe cette tension en nous faisant vivre ce moment en temps réel. L'humour est grinçant à souhait. Et la violence psychologique dans laquelle baigne toute cette histoire est constante.

Roman Polanski se déchaîne dans Carnage, son meilleur film depuis très longtemps. Une oeuvre brillante et hilarante, qui montre les travers de la société avec beaucoup de vitriol.

Alors que Polanski s'amuse à déplacer les personnages, tels des pions sur un échiquier, le rire du spectateur devient de plus en plus sardonique. De fait, comment ne pas reconnaître dans cette jouissive joute oratoire nos petits travers?

Sur papier, Carnage a de quoi faire saliver. Pourtant, à l'écran, ce film à la mise en scène précise et sans artifices, ces acteurs impeccables jusque dans leur refus d'en faire trop, déçoivent.

While his film feels too theatrical at times, it's a treat to watch Polanski work his magic with such limited means. Carnage is a deft, entertaining and constantly evolving affair that benefits most from not taking itself too seriously.

Reza's commentary on how societal courtesy is slowly destroying us all from within comes alive on screen, brimming with wit and savvy.

The structure and style of Carnage makes it a film that's not going to appeal to all audiences. There are some people who don't have the attention span to watch four characters argue for nearly an hour and a half, and that's fine. Those that can, however, will be treated to amazing performances from some of the best actors working today in a film that is uncomfortable, but entertaining to the end.

There's nothing terribly wrong with Carnage, the film version of Yasmina Reza's Tony-winning stage comedy God of Carnage. But there's nothing trippingly right with it either.
